"Cigarette butts are the most prevalent form of marine debris on earth, accounting for one in every five items collected during coastal clean-ups," said Brooke Porter, Conservation Director at Pacific Whale Foundation. "It is estimated that over 4.5 trillion cigarette butts are littered worldwide each year." Cigarette butts can contain over 165 chemicals, including cadmium, lead and arsenic, which can leach into the marine environment within one hour of contact with water. Cigarette butts poison wildlife, and can even poison children, when accidentally ingested. When wildlife ingests cigarette butts or other forms of plastic, it can block the digestive tract or fill the stomach, resulting in malnutrition and even starvation. The Pacific Whale Foundation interviewed cigarette smokers about why they throw cigarette butts on the floor. Many smokers had the misconception that cigarette butts biodegrade, smokers also said that they did not have a convenient way to carry cigarette butts off the beach. Beach ashtrays are a convenient way for smokers to remove their cigarette butts from the beach as they leave. A beach ashtray dispenser is placed near to the entrance to the beach. Clear signage informs smokers to take a free ashtray for use on the beach. Designed to partially fill with sand when pushed in to the beach the beach ashtray is easily emptied into the two litter bins near the ashtray dispenser. The first litter bin has a mesh bottom where the sand and the ash can fall back on to the beach while the cigarette butts are retained in the litter bin.
